Behind every new flavor and timeless classic is something bigger. Join us as we go Behind the Bottle and take you through an amazing new series showcasing our Teammates, community, and customers. We start by sharing the story of  Timothy Duhart and his journey as the first graduate of Coca-Cola Consolidated and CPCC’s Apprenticeship Program.

“I saw the apprenticeship advertised and I thought, ‘Oh man, that would be big. This is everything I’ve been waiting for.”

For years, Timothy Duhart worked as a truck driver, with the goal of one day finishing school to become a technician. Last year, Tim noticed Coca-Cola Consolidated’s apprenticeship program application advertised online. The timing was right; he applied and was accepted into the new program in July of 2023.

The apprenticeship program – a partnership between Coca-Cola Consolidated, Red Classic Transportation (RCT), and Central Piedmont Community College – launched in 2023.

“Our company is proud to partner with CPCC to provide interested individuals with specialized education and experiences necessary to prepare them for a career in our high-demand positions in manufacturing, equipment repair, and logistics,” said Todd Miller, Vice President of Organizational Capability at Coca-Cola Consolidated. These positions play an important role to make, sell and deliver the world’s most recognizable Coca-Cola products.”

Over the course of a year, selected apprentices participate in a customized certification program, receiving formal learning with Central Piedmont and on-the-job training in high-demand part-time skilled technical positions at Coke Consolidated’s Charlotte area facilities. Classes are specially chosen to provide apprentices with the training they need to succeed in the workforce.

Apprentices choose from three career pathways: Manufacturing & Automated Warehouse Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic, or Equipment Services Technician. The program helps provide participants with the benefits, resources and support they need to develop their strengths and grow in their career. After successfully finishing the apprenticeship, participants receive a custom certificate and the opportunity to move into a full-time position at Coke Consolidated or Red Classic Transportation

Upon being accepted as an apprentice, Tim began training as a Red Classic technician and attending CPCC. The mix of schooling and real-world experience enabled him to excel.

“Going to school gave me the scientific foundation I needed, making my work in the shop easier to piece together,” shares Tim. “I have tons of gratitude – This was a young man’s dream and I’m grateful I finally got the chance to do it. It’s been a blast.”

One year later, Tim proudly walked across the Bojangles Coliseum stage as the first graduate of the Coke Consolidated Apprenticeship program. An accomplishment that’s celebrated by all involved.

“We are thrilled to celebrate this first graduate of the Coca-Cola Consolidated Apprenticeship Program, and we’re excited to watch Timothy as he progresses through his career,” said Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer, Central Piedmont President. “We believe the Coca-Cola Consolidated Apprenticeship Program is an exemplary workforce development initiative. We thank Coca-Cola Consolidated for this unique partnership and their support,” Kandi added.

At Coke Consolidated, employees have a number of opportunities for learning experiences and resources to help them reach their fullest potential and achieve their career goals. After graduation, Tim began a full-time job as a C-Technician with Red Classic Transportation in mid-July.  As he advances in his career and pursues a purpose-driven career, Duhart shares his thanks and advice for students and potential applicants:

This apprenticeship is how you move to the next opportunity in your life. Who could beat an employer saying, ‘I will hire you, train you and put you through school.’ This is the best thing going. I feel a bunch of pride saying I now work for an employer with a big name known around the world.”

A new class of apprentices began their training this summer with the program experiencing growth in both applications and admissions.

“Coke Consolidated is committed to workforce development and economic opportunity in the communities it serves. Our goal is to attract, engage, and grow the next generation of diverse servant leaders,” said Miller. “We are excited to provide these career opportunities to those looking to grow their skillsets and career.”
